Have You Heard of Instagram Polls? YES/NO

ashton blogs

A little over a year ago, Instagram Stories were born. While at first it copped criticism for being a cheesy Snapchat copycat, it’s grown to be incredibly popular (dare I say more popular than Snapchat?) with its own unique features. But just as you were becoming a pro at drawing love hearts and doodling with glow pens, Instagram has upped its social game once again!

On October 3rd Instagram launched “Polls” –  a new sticker on “Stories” that allows your friends and followers to weigh in on the conversation. So now, if you can’t decide whether to order the Turmeric Infused Latte or the Caramel Latte on Almond Milk, your followers can help you decide. This update is revolutionary as it’s the first feature that allows individuals and businesses to get real time opinions from their followers.

But, like anything you post on your Instagram Story, your Poll will disappear after 24 hours (so make sure you take a peek at the results before they disappear).

So how does it work?

STEP 1: Take a photo or video

STEP 2: Tap the “smiley face” icon

STEP 3: Tap the Poll sticker

STEP 4: Type your question and answers

STEP 5: Click done and post to your story

STEP 6: Tap the eye icon on the bottom left to see who’s seen the story and voted

Things you might not know:

  • You can customize the Yes / No field to any A / B question. For example: Which Netflix series is better? Gossip Girl or Pretty Little Liars. #FirstWorldProblems
  • There is a character limit (27 characters per response field)
  • You can only have one Poll per story.
  • You can see full analytics on how many people responded and who responded with what answer (so make sure your response isn’t embarrassing!).
  • You can NOT change your response after voting.

But that’s not the end of the new features…

For those of you who get really creative on your Insta Stories (you know who you are 😉 ) you’re going to LOVE these two new creative tools.

The first – a new colour picker for text and brushes (hello shades of mauve and mint). When you choose a colour for your brushes or text, you’ll see an eyedropper icon which you use to select any colour from your photo or video and apply it to your text/brush.

The second – a fresh alignment tool for text and stickers. There’s nothing more frustrating (apart from slow drivers when you’re running late) than watching an Instagram story that has a text covered by the timer at the top. Anyone else feel me? Well this new feature is here to foil any further plans to obstruct your view. Now, when you position stickers or text on your story, you’ll see a blue line that will make sure you aren’t placing your sticker somewhere your users can’t see it.
